Self-Love

February 10, 2018 Sadye Evyn Reish 4 Comments

When TEAMride said they wanted to dedicate the month of February to Self-Love and honor that with weekly rides called “Midriff Monday,” I was like HELL YES, sign me up!! Is it because I’m single and will be spending yet another Valentine’s Day all by my lonesome—maybe. #tableforoneplease But mostly it’s because I believe it is so, so important to be kind to ourselves and love our bodies no matter their size, shape, color or weight.

Most people don’t know this, but I spent the better part of my teens and twenties feeling insecure and actually hating my midsection. Almost any time I caught a glimpse of my body in the mirror, I’d go through the usual roll call of insults in my head: I’m so fat, I hate my stomach, I shouldn’t have eaten that, I wish my tummy was flat…on and on I’d go. This may seem crazy to you, especially those who’ve ridden my class and know that I almost always rock just a sports bra and leggings, but it was the reality I lived in for a very long time.

Eventually, around age 27, I got to a point where nothing seemed to be working in my life and decided to go to therapy to figure out why. It was through those sessions and with the help of my AMAZING therapist, Dr. Leslie Hovsepian, that I realized it all came back to the way I was treating myself.

We’ve all heard the saying, “If you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all!” and while it’s usually intended toward others, the same goes for how we talk to and about ourselves.

That little voice inside our heads is so incredibly powerful and holds enormous weight in how we live our lives. Let’s commit right now to be kinder, not just to those around us, but to that amazing person in the mirror, and beyond the month of February, make 2018 the year of self-love.

If you’re in Sacramento, I hope you’ll join me for this week’s “Midriff Monday” ride on 2/12 at 7pm at the Midtown studio. Let’s celebrate our bodies, in all their forms, and rock those bikes sans shirts (encouraged, but not required). Because no matter who you are or what you look like, you are loved…
